​Hello Families,

Can you believe summer is just around the corner?!  We are welcoming a new Swim Lesson Coordinator this season, Hannah Williams. She is right here from Apex and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to lead our swim lesson program. A big thank you to Cindy Hardin for her continued help and guidance with this program, too.​ 

Below is a description of the classes offered this season:


Pre-Swim: 6 and under beginners

We are pleased to offer a Pre-Swim class for 6 and unders who want to join our awesome Shepherd's Vineyard Killer Whales swim team! This is a one class offered in the middle of May with an evaluation at the end of the session by Coach Robert to see if they meet the requirements to join the team. Each class will be focused on a new skill and a review. This is a commitment to attend all 8 classes and the evaluation day TBA. 


Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills

For children 3 years and up whom have no previous swim experience. Learn how to blow bubbles and put your face in the water, jump into the pool, and roll from front to back using arms and legs for support.  Become comfortable in the water to begin learning initial swimming skills.


Level 2: Fundamental Water Skills

For children 3 years and up who are comfortable getting their face wet and going underwater.  Learn to bob up and down in water while blowing bubbles, open eyes underwater and pick up a submerged item in shallow water, float on back with a glide.  Begin to learn to swim using a crawl and elementary back stock.  Learning to tread water.


Level 3: Stroke Development

For children 4 years old and up who can perform fundamental water skills independently.  Learn to swim from front to back and glide in the water, develop freestyle and backstroke. Tread water and learn to dive.


Level 4: Advanced Stroke Development

For children 7 years and up whom can swim independently and want to perform and refine the proper swim strokes. Learn to swim freestyle with breathing, backstroke and breaststroke. Tread water using arms and legs for one minute.  Dive from the side or diving board.
